Who is Logan Smoot?

Development
Logan Smoot grew up in Spring Hill, Kansas. He picked up the trumpet in Middle School and couldn’t seem to put it down. Since he was a sophomore in high school, he was mentored by Aaron Linscheid, another Kansas City-based trumpet player. Since enrolling at Ottawa University in 2020, he has been mentored by Todd Wilkinson, Aaron Linscheid, and Dan Thomas.

As a composer, Logan Smoot's compositions uplift and inspire his audiences through his use of beautiful melodies and thoughtful harmonies.

Live Wire is  a contrafact of Arthur Schwartz’s “Alone Together” and Duke Ellington’s “In a Sentimental Mood.” A contrafact is a new melody written over the chord changes from another song. The melody Smoot wrote is harmonically inspired by the minor 2-5-1 progression written throughout “Alone Together.” Live Wire is intended as a vehicle to display proficiency over the minor 2-5-1 progression. Smoot’s composition has been performed live at KC venues such as Johnnie’s Jazz Bar at the Power and Light District in Kansas City.
