Live Wire is a contrafact of Arthur Schwartz’s “Alone Together” and Duke Ellington’s “In a Sentimental Mood.” A contrafact is a new melody written over the chord changes from another song. The melody Smoot wrote is harmonically inspired by the minor 2-5-1 progression written throughout “Alone Together.” Live Wire is intended as a vehicle to display proficiency over the minor 2-5-1 progression. Smoot’s composition has been performed live at KC venues such as Johnnie’s Jazz Bar at the Power and Light District in Kansas City.
